Nom : République des Maldives (vient du sanskrit màlà ou « guirlande » et dvipa « îles »). En maldivien : Dhivehi Raajjeyge Jumhooriyyaa.
Situation : pratiquement au centre de l’océan Indien, juste au-dessus de l’équateur, à 595 km au sud-ouest du subcontinent indien et à 670 km du Sri Lanka.
Superficie : 227 km².
Population : 393 600 habitants (estimation 2014).
Densité : 1735 hab./km².
Capitale : Malé.
Nombre d'îles : les 22 atolls regroupent officiellement 1 199 îles ou îlots, dont 3 îles principales isolées. Seules 200 de ces îles sont habitées.
Langue : divehi ou maldivien, proche du cinghalais avec un mélange de hindi et d’arabe. L’écriture, le tana, est apparentée à l’arabe. L’anglais est également parlé partout.
Taux d'alphabétisation : 96 %.
Religion : l'islam sunnite est la religion d'État. Cette religion est au cœur de la société : on ne peut être citoyen maldivien sans être musulman.
Monnaie : rufiyaa.
Gouvernement : les Maldives ont constitué une république islamique présidentielle sans parti politique jusqu'en mai 2005, date à laquelle a été introduit le multipartisme.

Économie

Avant le tourisme de masse qui s'est développé à partir des années 1950 et surtout depuis la décennie 1970, les Maldives ne vivaient pratiquement que de la pêche. Aujourd'hui, la majeure partie des ressources des Maldives proviennent du tourisme (30 % du PIB) et de la pêche (20 %).
Le nombre de touristes est passé de seulement un millier en 1972 à plusieurs centaines de milliers, sur des îles initialement désertes et transformées en hôtels. On compte désormais des centaines d'« îles-hôtels ». Mais la faible capacité d'accueil protège les Maldives du tourisme de masse.
Exposées au péril de la montée des océans, les Maldives auraient été le pays le plus touché, d'un point de vue économique, par le tsunami du 26 décembre 2004. Près de 95 % du territoire des Maldives avaient été submergés pendant quelques heures et certaines îles n'ont pas pu être réhabilitées. L'économie du pays, essentiellement touristique et liée à la pêche, a donc subi toutes les conséquences de cette catastrophe. Depuis 2010, la croissance est repartie, portée par le tourisme.
Le pays est surendetté, paralysé par des divisions politiques, fragilisé par la faible qualification de sa main d’œuvre.
Les principaux clients de l'archipel sont la Thaïlande, le Sri Lanka et le Royaume-Uni. Ses principaux fournisseurs sont Singapour, les Émirats arabes unis et l'Union européenne.

Droits de l'Homme

Depuis 2012, les Maldives sont dirigées par un gouvernement islamiste conservateur, qui applique un islam rigoureux basé sur la charia. Loin d’être un paradis pour carte postale, les Maldives comptent parmi les pays les plus répressifs du monde.
Les femmes peuvent être flagellées pour avoir eu des relations sexuelles hors mariage, même en cas de viol. En mai 2014, la peine de mort a été rétablie. Elle s'applique désormais aux enfants, qui deviennent pénalement responsables dès 10 ans, et même dès 7 ans pour des crimes « graves » comme le vol, la consommation d'alcool ou l'apostasie. Emprisonnés, ces enfants seront exécutés à leurs 18 ans.
Or, les traités internationaux, dont la convention relative aux droits de l'enfant, ratifiée par les Maldives, interdisent la peine de mort pour les enfants âgés de moins de 18 ans au moment des faits
